WRITING EXERCISES

1. Explain how three of the dozen problem-solving techniques of Section 1.2 were used in this section to lead up to the statement of Lagrange’s Theorem. (You may be able to see more than three techniques used here; just explain three of them.)

2. (A research problem in mathematical history.) Group theory is generally regarded as having its origins in a long letter from Evariste Galois to a friend, written in 1832 on the night before Galois was killed. However, Lagrange’s Theorem, a fundamental result of group theory, is named after Joseph Louis Lagrange, who died in 1813 (when Galois was about two years old). Explain this historical paradox. Be sure to cite the sources you use.
